Tasalsul/

Tasalsul

Tum udaasi mein rehti ho
Tou ghar mein nahi rehti
Ghar bhi nahi rehta
Khisak sa jaata hai
Apni buniyadun se
Thehar nahi paata hai
Kai fariyadun se
Pata badal jaata hai -
Goya ek ghamgheen shehar hai
Shehar mein tareek ek mohalla
Mohalla ki ek awara sadak
Sadak ke kinare roshan siyah lamppost
Jiski roshni mein pareshan tum
Tum mein ek makaan baitha hai -

Tum Ghar mein rehti ho aur
Ghar tum mein rehta hai

Curtain of Words

The pleated curtain furls,
unfurls and swirls
like a young heart in love.
I want the braids to emerge
here, somehow,
so that I can uncurtain you
to enter the windows in view.

You disrobed the entire house one day
and the walls stood naked in display,
your detergent soaked palms
bestowing words in alms.

I am still searching the wall over which
these lines break like a ridge.

VIEW FROM THE WINDOW

Windows are always on the verge
Of rooms
Of houses
Balancing finely between
Inviting in or out
Like eyes
Seeing and dreaming.

Then there are houses
That can't even be called houses
Where the metaphor hangs
Between a window and a door.
One conveniently leads to another.

Our ancestors understood this dilemma
Advising us not to open
The windows when
The neighbours are bickering
Or making love.
In those moments
Houses become a divine window
Opening into one another.

Windows, they advised,
Should always open into hearts
Not into blinding green gardens!
